Students across the country have been making social media accounts
to express things about students or the school all together. Is it excessive at ITMS though? Many students are getting pictures posted of them without consent or sometimes without being told. Is this to directly bully them or simply for content? When students are making these posts they are not thinking about how it may make the person feel. Some people may not care but for the ones that do, how is it affecting them?
One big thing to know is that students are very involved in this even if it isn't their account. This shows that a mass amount of people are contributing to the content. For example, In the “itms.ships” bio on instagram it says “send us dms of people u ship we will post and rate it. Lets try to get all ITMS following so we get people together” this
account is encouraging students to help them post people. Although the ships accounts aren't that bad there's some that are exclusively to make fun of people for example, an account that posts “bad hair” of students of all grades. Students are sending in pictures of their friends or even enemies just to make them look bad or most likely just as a innocent joke.
Something that's overlooked by some is that for most students these accounts are just entertaining. When kids see these posts they're most likely going to just laugh and go on with their days. we asked a student how they felt about the accounts and she said “ I think it’s funny as a joke but they can be controversial and stir up drama” and another said “It’s funny sometimes but they take pictures and post them without consent of the people they take pictures of” as you can see this topic is very arguable. With all seriousness though this can really hurt one’s feelings and impact how they feel about themselves. For instance the “itms_gays” is just exclusive and hurtful. In addition we asked a teacher at ITMS how they felt about it and they said “ people have shown me the accounts and it’s an invasion of privacy and safety to be recorded inside of the school. It isn’t safe that people are posting without their consent, not cool at all”.
With everything we’ve talked about, how do you feel? Do you think the ITMS students' posts are rude? If you didn’t already know all of this you should have seen how the accounts are or aren’t affecting students and staff. After all, do you think it will get better or will this gain a more serious impact?
