School Shootings - How Could We Prevent This?- Jaslene Cintron

As a lot of people know, school shootings are always reoccuring and that’s not

good. A bunch of schools have gone through them in multiple states and many

kids and teachers have sadly passed away due to these incidents.

Almost every year, 3,500 children and teens are shot and killed during school

shootings. 15,000 more are injured and close to death. Schools have now had to

do safety precautions, when this shouldn’t be a thing. School should be a safe,

and good place for children and teenagers to go and learn. People fear going to

school because of these reasons.

A recent school shooting was at Oxford High School in Oakland County,

Michigan. On November 30, 2021, Ethan Crumbley, a 15 year old boy who

attended Oxford High School shot up Oxford High School. Resulting in 4

students being killed, and 7 people injured from his crimes--one person being a

teacher. Although he was a sophomore, he was charged as an adult. He was

charged with 24 crimes, two being murder and terrorism (Who is Oxford High

School 'shooter' Ethan Crumbley? (the-sun.com)).

His parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, were also charged for not securing

the handgun used in the shooting. They were charged with involuntary

manslaughter. After they didn’t attend their arraignment, they were subjects of a

manhunt. They were found and arrested on December 4 (Oxford High School

shooting - Wikipedia).

Now, Ethan Crumbley is said to be mentally ill after being charged with adult

charges (Is Ethan Crumbley Mentally Ill? Everything To Know About Michigan

School Shooter, Parents Incident Explored (mixedarticle.com)).This being said,

how could we possibly prevent this? There’s some ways we could maybe prevent

these kids or people from doing these horrific crimes and here’s how.

The first way is just listening to them. Some kids have problems with sharing their

feelings, resulting in them bottling up their feelings. Sometimes, just letting these

children talk about their problems might help. Mental health is really important,

and young children don’t know how to handle the problems alone. Allowing these

young high schoolers talk about their problems could definitely prevent these

horrible thoughts going into their mind.

Another way to prevent this is just generally watching their behaviors. Seeing

how people treat them, seeing how they treat themselves. It’s all about how they

respect themselves, and how other people respect them. I think kids decide to do

this horrific act because people in the school treated them in a bad way. Though

this doesn’t excuse their actions, it gives a reason and makes people realize

why.

Cora Haas, a student in 7th grade, was asked how we are able to prevent school

shootings. She said, “I think we need to make gun rights more strict. People

having guns freely is a little weird because they can do whatever they want with

it.” I think shes definitely correct. Making gun rights and rules may help

sufficiently if we give the right people guns. This being said, WHO should be

getting guns? I think there should be a contract about having a gun so it’s more

secure, plus police officers having them at all times (obviously.)
