THE ECONOMIC EFFECT OF THE INVASION OF UKRAINE- Alyssandra Monte and Kenneth Dayton

We all know that Ukraine has been invaded by Russia. It used to be part of the

former USSR, until its collapse. Russian troops are pouring in from the north, east,

and south. The outcome looks bleak. We may be looking at a large European

conflict in the near future, like many other wars. In this day and age, many

countries rely on Russian exports. Several nations have already imposed massive

trade bans on Russia. What effect will these bans have on the world?

Background Information

Even before the Russian invasion, Ukraine had it rough. Ukraine has never been especially wealthy. In 1991, Ukraine was recognized as an independent nation. It had been a republic in the Soviet Union, which collapsed that year. Even before the

times of the Soviet Union, many people in and around present-day Ukraine have

been farmers. Ukraine is not poor, but is stuck under the shadow of the ever

growing Russia. And for the past decade, Russia has been trying to reclaim

Ukraine.

To begin, we all know that Ukraine is benefiting neither the European Union or

Russia. Included below are several interviews from ITMS sources about their

perspective on the effect economically. One of the people asked was Mrs. Liotta, an 8th grade ELA teacher. The first question: What do you think will happen to our supplies? She answered “We might not be physically affected but with crypto

currency or hacking I think we will suffer virtually.” The second question: How do you think this could affect smaller countries? “It depends on Russia’s response, especially to those neighboring countries. I'm not sure what the plan is for people who are fleeing Ukraine into Poland. Third question: Why and how would this impact the world? “Well It depends on the response of NATO. If NATO decides to attack Russia. Russia is pretty comparable in many areas to NATO.” Haley from Mrs. Liotta’s class commented on the issue. First question: How do you think this will impact smaller countries? “It depends on if they are willing to go and help, for now everyone is staying away from Ukraine and Russia as they are in their little

war. Second question: How will this impact the world? “It's not necessarily going

to impact the world just yet it depends on how it plays out.” Third question: What

do you think will happen to our supplies? “As long as the US isn't involved then

we should be relatively fine.” Next we asked another one of Mrs. Liotta’s students,

Sean. First question: What do you think will happen to our supplies? “I think

Russia will try and take them but we won't allow them.” Second question: How do

you think this could impact smaller countries? “They will have to be involved in

the war and that will dwindle their supplies.” Third question: How will this impact

the world? “People are dying because Russia attacked Ukraine because they want a

little bit of land.” Those were all our interviews collected. It was great to hear

many different opinions.

Several ITMS History teachers were also asked about the invasion. Mrs. Wells, 6th

grade history teacher was asked how she thought the Russians would react about

the sanctions that were placed. “I think the Russians will retaliate. They are very

angry people, and tend to strike out”. And what would the sanctions mean for

America? “To Russia, we are all the West. Here in the US, there are a lot of

Russian land-owners, so I believe the invasion could affect real estate prices. Mrs.

Klayman, 6th grade world history teacher was also asked about the war. First

question: How do you think it will impact us in America? “It’s going to directly

impact our allies because of some of the treaties we are under we are going to have

to show our support. I think economically we are going to continue to feel an

impact.” Second question: What do you think it will do to smaller countries? “Well

I'm sure they are feeling very nervous right now. I don't know if I can necessarily

predict that.” Third question: What do you think will happen to our supplies? “We

would probably see a big shift in our economy and war times productions.” This concludes our interviews. Several news sources, such as CNN, The New York Times, and The Washington Post have also written articles about the subject, all very similar to what was stated.

To conclude, these economic sanctions have clearly impacted not just Russia, but

the rest of the world. Countries have banned Russian goods, planes, and even

boycotted anything Russian they can get their hands on. Only time will tell what

this invasion will bring to the global market.
